Community colleges use innovative strategies to improve completion

Community colleges face unique challenges in improving attainment rates, but schools across the country are developing strategies that change the way we think about how to retain, graduate, and measure success, from transfer outreach and "automatic graduation" to peer mentoring and helping students map their path through college early on. 

The innovations are leading to higher degree attainment rates. Valencia College in Florida, for example, has attained a three-year attainment/transfer rate of 50 percent, compared with the national average of 40 percent.
